False Reporting

We were informed of the following issue/case by MDDB Selangor:-

Dear people, Journalists play a very important role in forming public perception and false reporting can create unfair and unwarranted perception amongst the masses. Given this, the report by Harian Metro’s Junaidi  Ladjana that a boy was killed by his family’s pet dog is both malicious and probably reflects his bias against man’s best friend. This article is enough to get some people worked-up and demand the authorities to go on a dog killing spree. Please write to Junaidi Ladjana at:  djuns@hmetro.com.my  and cc the message to Harian Metro’s chief news editor Tuan Mohd Asri Tuan Hussein at:  asri@hmetro.com.my
In response to this, MDDB & MCCP Northern has jumped into action immediately and wrote an email directed to the people concerned. We simply could not bear to see more animals put into unnecessary sufferings due to human's error. This is just not tolerable. It's unethical for the journalist to publish an article without even confirming the authenticity of the facts.

Our email to the culprit and the Chief News Editor of Harian Metro as per below:-

To Junaidi Ladjana,

We, on behalf of Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better & Malaysian Cats Care Project of Northern Region would like to critize you on your irresponsible reporting on the case reported by you in myMetro entitled "Dibaham  anjing" - http://www.hmetro.com.my/articles/Dibahamanjing/Article/. The publication from Berita Harian, entitled "Bukan kena baham anjing" - http://www.bharian.com.my/bharian/articles/Bukankenabahamanjing_/Article/ has obviously proven your wrongs! As a journalist, you have done such a disgraced to your profession by reporting a false report that might cause unlimited harms to innocent lives at wide. How could you even think of publishing a report when you have yet to confirm the authenticity of the facts? This shows how little respect you have for your job and also for the animals. It reflects your prejudice against animals, dogs in particular. To you, dogs are consider "haram" but don't forget, they too are God's creation, just like cats. Do not try to play God with your words just because you are a journalist by profession. By having you published such false report, it is enough to get some people worked-up and demand the authorities to go on a dog killing spree. Are you able to bear the consequences of the mistake done solely by you?! You deserve to be condemned by the nation!

We demand for you to publish an article of apology and have your job re-assessed again as your professionalism in handling your work is truly questionable. If no response been made known, we shall continue to highlight this matter until we get a satisfactory answer!

Thank you.

Kuda Fighting For Survival

Kuda is a dog recently rescued from the street after he got into a dog fight with a gang of strays. He was found with an ENORMOUS wound on his back filled with maggots. When rescuers took him off the street, it was already late night and so they put him on a 2nd Floor shoplot before making plans to take him to the vet the following day. However, he jumped from the 2nd Floor building the very same night and escaped. Rescuers were unable to locate him until 2 days later and immediately took him to Life Vet.

The vet gave him a thorough check-up and found him to have internal injuries (due to the jumped) besides the physical wound he had obtained from the fight. An advise from the vet was to put him down as the road of recovery may take very long and the cost incurred may well financially drain us.

MDDB & MCCP Northern adhere to no-kill policy and shall abide to our policy at all times. We will fight together with Kuda and go through all obstacles with him. In fact, there is not even a slightest sign of giving up in Kuda. He has consumed all food serve to him and response well to his rescuers. Is there a reason why we have to put him down? We couldn't find any...No-way!!!

We have since transfered Kuda from Life Vet to Peng Aun since most of our rescued dogs are there and it will be more convenient for us to visit him. Kuda need to be boarded there temporary until further advise from Dr. Teoh.

Kuda needs a lot of positive energy in order to fight through his ordeal. If you are nearby, do drop him a visit. Whisper a word of support....a word of encouragement and you will be surprised such small gesture will make a huge difference to Kuda.

Many, Many Thanks...

Kuda - stray dog fights for life

Kuda was previously rescued from the streets after he was seriously wounded from a dog fight with a gang of strays. He suffered further injuries when he escaped from his rescuers' home by jumping off from a 2nd floor building and went missing for 2 days. When at last, his rescuers managed to locate him, he was in the worst of shape.

Vet's advice was to put Kuda to sleep and end all sufferings as it would be a long and tough journey to the road of recovery. And believe it or not, on the very next day when the rescuers were supposedly to  inform the vet on their decision, Kuda chose to decide his own destiny. Having been down for the last couple of days with no appetite for food, Kuda has chosen this moment to wag his tail upon seeing his rescuers and finished off all food presented to him right in front of his rescuers. Is this a sign sent by Kuda indicating he wants to fight on? We take it as a YES! And we are willing to fight with him with no regrets.

Kuda was making progress but the improvements were just way too slow. We decided to discharge Kuda from the clinic and let him recuperate in a home environment, while we look for other options/advice in hope to fasten the pace of Kuda's healing. It was at this moment that we had an encounter with Dr. Joshua from HOPE Vet. He recommended that Kuda be sent down to Gasing Veterinary Hospital in Selangor to undergo skin grafting. The process will speed up Kuda's recovery tremendously.

Without wasting more time, we make arrangement to have Kuda sent down to Gasing Veterinary Hospital which is a 4 hours drive from our State. Fen Ying and Chuah took charged to transport Kuda down to Selangor.

On 22nd June 2011, Kuda made his way to Gasing Veterinary Hospital, Selangor. Kuda's case was assigned to Dr. Prem. After a thorough checking, we were given 3 options:-

1. Let Kuda heal on its own and bring him to the vet daily to cleanse the wounds which will probably take a very long time.
2. Stitch up the wounds (this is only applicable on certain smaller wounds which the new skins are visibly growing out)
3. Skin grafting (most advisable by the vet)

We have opted option 2 for the smaller wounds and option 3 for the huge wound as per advised by Dr. Prem. Total cost estimated for the whole procedures inclusive of boarding of half-a-year is RM6,000.00.

Kuda was on the list for surgery on the same weekend he was admitted. Since he has a large skin deficit over his left fore part of the body, the vet will be doing advancement flaps to bring the edges of his wounds closer together. It will take a long time to heal but things are looking good. He is after all, a champion dog.

Fan Kt, a member of Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) has been visiting Kuda regularly and updating us with Kuda's most current progress. We could not thank her enough for the good deed she had done to help us.
Update (28.6.11) by Fan Kt:
"Visited Kuda today. He finishes all the rice, chicken breast, liver and carrot at one go. Must have missed soft food. Dr Prem has joined some part of the skin near his side of the neck, so less exposed area. Bed sore has dried up more."
Update (30.6.11) by Fan Kt:
"YeaH! I took Kuda's pix with Doc's permission. He is more ac...tive today, probably not so painful anymore. He looks like he is wearing a jumper. I gave him an old cushion for him to lie on. Today he knows how to whine and wags his tail. So much progress in just 2 days."

Updates on Kuda as at 15.7.11 (photos speak better than words):-

Today 11 August 2011, a good Samaritan, Myza has visited Kuda at Gasing Veterinary Hospital and took for us some photos of Kuda's progress. According to Dr. Prem, Kuda may only need another one more month to heal, after which he shall be free to discharge.

As updated by Myza, Kuda was all smiles and he just could not stop wagging his tail. Here are some photos to share:-

Stay tune to us on more updates on Kuda.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to:-

1. ALL DONORS who had donated to Kuda's Medical Fund
2. WELL WISHERS who had non-stop been sending their prayers to Kuda, praying for his speedy recovery everyday.
3. DR. JOSHUA from HOPE VET who had travel all the way from Penang Island to Butterworth to examine Kuda.

The 4 Farm Dogs To Be Put-To-Sleep Tomorrow

On Jan 9, Irish tourist Maurice Sullivan, 50, was mauled to death by two mongrels at an organic farm in Teluk Bahang, Penang.

A post-mortem revealed that Sullivan had died of severe hemorrhage after suffering multiple bites, especially on the limbs, head and neck.
Both dogs were taken to the State Veterinary Department on Jan 10 for observation and found to be in perfect health with no infection of rabies.

In the mid of February, the authorities took into custody two more dogs which belong to Teoh as part of the investigation into the tragic death of Sullivan. The two dogs are of the same mixed breed as the mongrels which were seized following the Jan 9 incident.

On April 4, fruit farm owners Joseph Teoh, 42, and his wife Teoh Bee Eng, 56, were fined a total of RM4,000 or in default three months jail term each, for owning four dogs without collars and registration licences.

Magistrate Mohd Hidayat Wahab imposed the fine after the couple, who were unrepresented, pleaded guilty at the Balik Pulau Magistrate's Court Monday.

On the other hand, Mohd Hidayat said the four dogs, which were pit bull type dogs, would be handed over to the Penang Municipal Council's veterinary department to be destroyed or dealt with any other action deemed suitable.

WHY THEY DON'T DESERVE TO DIE?

1. There were no witness during the time of occurrence, so who can prove that the dogs are guilty? The dogs may have acted in self-defense. Nobody actually saw what had happened from the beginning.  - Innocent Until Proven Guilty. Did Sullivan do anything to provoke these dogs? No one knows. But just because Sullivan is dead and these dogs could not speak out their testaments, they deserve to be destroyed? Where is JUSTICE, then?

2. These dogs are merely carrying out their duties as guard dogs. They are there to protect their masters and guard the property. If carrying out a duty is consider a crime, does that mean security guards who shot down robbers during the time of robbery should be sentence to death as well?

3. The 2 dogs, Ning and Li that are supposed to have been involved in the attacked have been observed and found by the Veterinary Department to be docile and disease-free. They are not aggressive or violent. The Veterinary Department has even issued a press statement to this effect. Nobody saw the whole incident of the attack and no cause has been ascertained as to what triggered the attack. Therefore, it is unjustified in euthanizing them.

4. It is believed that only 2 dogs were involved in the attack of Maurice Sullivan. They are Ning and Li while Yin and Kang are totally innocent as they were not anywhere near when the incident took place. So, what is the reason that both Yin and Kang need to be destroyed as well?

5. It was in fact reported earlier that a police investigation had found that only one of the two dogs was involved in the fatal attack, so why total of 4 dogs should be put to sleep?

6. Agnieszka Jablonska, 28, the Polish friend of Sullivan said she would not press charges against Joseph Teoh and his family members as she had accepted the incident as an accident, so why is Malaysian Government still pressing charges against these dogs? Does Animal Rights even exists in our country?

The 4 dogs will be Put-To-Sleep tomorrow. Owner, Joseph Teoh will be there to stop the killing of his 4 dogs. Anyone who could be there to give your support, please gather around The Veterinary Department of Penang at River Road tomorrow at 8am. For further details, feel free to contact April at 012-4708308.

Mimi & 2 Other Puppies Rescued

Name: Mimi
Gender: Female
Age: 5 months
Status: Spayed

Mimi was rescued today from the hill slope heading towards Batu Ferringhi. She and another 2 younger puppies (age 2 months) have made themselves a home just by the roadside in the middle of the busy streets of passing cars. There were no shelter to keep them off the rain and sun. Worst of all, the puppies were seen playing by the side of the road risking being run over by cars.

 Name: M-Puppy-01
Gender: Female
Age: 2 months

Mimi is currently boarding at Peng Aun Veterinary Clinic awaiting sterilization while the two puppies are under foster care.

 Name: M-Puppy-02
Gender: Female
Age: 2 months

Note that both puppies are suffering from some kind of skins problem and may need time to heal. But with some good and tender care, they will be able to recover in no time.
