Kuda's Journey Of Recovery

Kuda was previously rescued from the streets after he was seriously wounded from a dog fight with a gang of strays. He suffered further injuries when he escaped from his rescuers' home by jumping off from a 2nd floor building and went missing for 2 days. When at last, his rescuers managed to locate him, he was in the worst of shape.

Vet's advice was to put Kuda to sleep and end all sufferings as it would be a long and tough journey to the road of recovery. And believe it or not, on the very next day when the rescuers were supposedly to  inform the vet on their decision, Kuda chose to decide his own destiny. Having been down for the last couple of days with no appetite for food, Kuda has chosen this moment to wag his tail upon seeing his rescuers and finished off all food presented to him right in front of his rescuers. Is this a sign sent by Kuda indicating he wants to fight on? We take it as a YES! And we are willing to fight with him with no regrets.

Kuda was making progress but the improvements were just way too slow. We decided to discharge Kuda from the clinic and let him recuperate in a home environment, while we look for other options/advice in hope to fasten the pace of Kuda's healing. It was at this moment that we had an encounter with Dr. Joshua from HOPE Vet. He recommended that Kuda be sent down to Gasing Veterinary Hospital in Selangor to undergo skin grafting. The process will speed up Kuda's recovery tremendously.

Without wasting more time, we make arrangement to have Kuda sent down to Gasing Veterinary Hospital which is a 4 hours drive from our State. Fen Ying and Chuah took charged to transport Kuda down to Selangor.

On 22nd June 2011, Kuda made his way to Gasing Veterinary Hospital, Selangor. Kuda's case was assigned to Dr. Prem. After a thorough checking, we were given 3 options:-

1. Let Kuda heal on its own and bring him to the vet daily to cleanse the wounds which will probably take a very long time.
2. Stitch up the wounds (this is only applicable on certain smaller wounds which the new skins are visibly growing out)
3. Skin grafting (most advisable by the vet)

We have opted option 2 for the smaller wounds and option 3 for the huge wound as per advised by Dr. Prem. Total cost estimated for the whole procedures inclusive of boarding of half-a-year is RM6,000.00.

Kuda was on the list for surgery on the same weekend he was admitted. Since he has a large skin deficit over his left fore part of the body, the vet will be doing advancement flaps to bring the edges of his wounds closer together. It will take a long time to heal but things are looking good. He is after all, a champion dog.

Fan Kt, a member of Malaysian Dogs Deserve Better (MDDB) has been visiting Kuda regularly and updating us with Kuda's most current progress. We could not thank her enough for the good deed she had done to help us.

Update (28.6.11) by Fan Kt:
"Visited Kuda today. He finishes all the rice, chicken breast, liver and carrot at one go. Must have missed soft food. Dr Prem has joined some part of the skin near his side of the neck, so less exposed area. Bed sore has dried up more."
Update (30.6.11) by Fan Kt:
"YeaH! I took Kuda's pix with Doc's permission. He is more ac...tive today, probably not so painful anymore. He looks like he is wearing a jumper. I gave him an old cushion for him to lie on. Today he knows how to whine and wags his tail. So much progress in just 2 days."

Stay tune to us on more updates on Kuda.
